R. Shaefer Heard Campground – West Point, GA – October 24 – 31, 2023

We left Mt. Pisgah Campground in North Carolina on Tuesday, October 24th around 9 am for a 5-hour drive through South Carolina and Georgia to the R. Shaefer Heard Campground in West Point, Georgia on the West Point Lake. We were still seeing some Fall colors, though a bit muted at this stage.

Our site was a nice level asphalt pad, however the layout was a bit strange. For one thing the power pedestal was on the opposite side of where they are normally placed, so I had to use my 50 amp extension cord. For another, the placement of the site next to us meant that their fire ring was only about 15 feet from our front door. Fortunately that site stayed vacant for most of our stay.

Our site was on the edge of the lake, so we had peaceful views of the placid water.

The sunsets across the lake were spectacular. The photos we took do not come close to doing justice to the beauty of the sun dipping down toward and beyond the horizon of West Point Lake. We made it a point to be out there every evening to enjoy the view Mother Nature was providing.

We took at least one walk a day around the campground, and a couple of days we took two. Other than the weekend (which was like a party city for the locals) the campground was quiet and peaceful and we enjoyed taking Bella on walks around the various loops.

The campground did not sell firewood, but they directed us to an 82 year old man near the campground who did. They warned us that he liked to talk and boy were they right! But he was generous with the amount of wood he sold for $7 so I handed him a ten-dollar bill and asked him to keep the change. We’ll have enough wood left over for our next stop as well.

This was a pretty much a 7-day “nothing” stop for us. No plans to visit anything or go anywhere. We’re conserving our strength for our stops in Florida as they will be pretty hectic, especially the first couple of them. Those will be mostly lots of family time (YAY!) and medical appointments (BOO!). So for now, we’re just taking it easy during this week.

Thanks for following The Wandering Wetheringtons.
