Arrow Rock State Historic Site in Arrow Rock, MO October 1 – 4, 2024

We left West Rolling Hills Campground on Tuesday, October 1st at 10 am and arrived at the Arrow Rock State Historic Site campground at 3 pm. Our GPS took us a less direct route than what shows on the Google Map photo. It happens sometimes due to road conditions or bridge/tunnel heights that may not work for the travel trailer.

Or sometimes the GPS is just wrong.

Upon arrival, we were very disappointed to discover that heavy water had flowed through our site creating a 4-inch deep rut across the gravel site pad. We already knew from the online description that the site was sloped and that trees made it a real chore to back into the site. We were prepared for those issues. But for the camp hosts NOT to do their job and level out the rut was just ridiculous! You can see from the photos how bad it was, especially since it ran under where two of our stabilizers needed to sit.

We never saw the hosts during our three-night stay, so Cindy left an appropriate review.

Hiking to Arrow Rock

Wednesday morning we hiked a pretty rough trail with Bella, who seemed to love it, to the historic town of Arrow Rock (Pop. 56). It was only 3/4 of a mile away but the terrain made it seem MUCH farther, lol! We walked around part of the town but decided to head back to Nomad before we were done so as not to tire out Bella too much. Our round-trip hike/walk ended up being 3 miles and we felt that was a bit too much for our girl.

Although Missouri is a Red state, we were surprised and pleased to see many Harris/Walz yard signs and bumper stickers in the residential section of the town.

Later in the afternoon we drove back over and finished walking around the town. We also checked out the historic sites and toured the Visitor Center to learn some of the the local history.

Even though it is a small town in size (about 20 square blocks) they have a stage theater which was currently performing “Million Dollar Quartet.” I tried to get tickets for the Thursday matinee but they only had four seats left and no two of them were even close together. While we were there Wednesday afternoon the streets were filled with parked vehicles of attendees (more than the population of the town), so it was a popular place for being out in the middle of nowhere.

Bella Lab Results

Thursday, October 3rd we were still waiting to hear back from the vet about Bella’s lab test results from the previous week. We were supposed to have heard on Monday or Tuesday so of course we weren’t too thrilled about the delay. When we finally heard the news it was a mixture of good and bad. The good was that Bella was still in Stage 3 of her kidney failure, but the bad news was that it was at a higher level, thus edging closer to Stage 4. The vet prescribed a higher dose of antibiotic because her UTI was pretty severe. And a different pain medication for the nerve issues in her neck and arthritis in her back hips.

Cindy spent part of the afternoon trying to see where we could get the new prescription. She finally found we could get it the next day at a Costco when we were to drive through St. Louis on the way to our next stop. We were able to find a Costco on the outskirts of St. Louis so that we didn’t have to drive through the downtown part of the city. We’ve done that before and it was no fun at all!

The Badger’s Hideaway

Later Thursday afternoon we drove back over to Arrow Rock after our lunch and had homemade ice cream at a place called The Badger’s Hideaway on Main Street. The ice cream was delicious and they had a cat who expected every patron to scratch its ears as part of their dining experience. It was adorable.

That night we packed up most of our things so we could get an early start on Friday morning for our trip to Whittington, Illinois with our added stop in St. Louis for Bella’s new medicine.

Thanks for following The Wandering Wetheringtons.
