After getting tired of waiting for USACE to make a decision about whether they would close Whitetail Ridge Campground, we left there around 12:30 pm on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 and drove about an hour north to Chattahoochee Bend State Park, near Newnan, Georgia for a 10-night stay. It’s more expensive than the USACE campground and Cindy had to do some shuffling with our stay after this one, but we decided we did not want to keep worrying about if or when Whitetail Ridge would close.
The site was fairly level, gravel with plenty of length for the trailer and truck. Again, like Whitetail Ridge it was not very busy so it was nice to have the peace and quiet.
The Tower Trail
Thursday morning after breakfast we drove down to the trailhead near the boat ramp so we could check out the Tower Trail. The Tower Trail is part of the longer 5 1/2 mile trail and is only 2 miles roundtrip, which is more our speed, lol. Most of the trail is in the woods so we had a nice, shady hike through the trees. Part of it was close to the river, so we got some nice views of the muddy, sometime brown and sometime blue water as it slowly flowed by the shore.
The Tower is only two stories high, but it provides a nice overhead view of that portion of the Chattahoochee River.
Cindy went up first while I kept Bella on the ground. We got a good laugh when she was startled by the dark, low wooden bench at the top, thinking it was an alligator that had climbed up the steps.
Plus, her going first kept ME from being startled so I didn’t scream like a baby when I saw it.
It was a nice, scenic hike. But those two miles killed my left knee and I ended up elevating and icing my knee when we got back to Nomad.
Friday, since my knee was still hurting, Cindy went on a hike by herself on a trail that was near our campground. Thirty minutes after she left my phone rang with a call from her. “I don’t know where I am” she said.
We have often joked with me asking why I chose her to be my navigator when she is one of the most directionally-challenged people I know.
But in her case, she has eternal job security.
Anyway, a few seconds later she found a marker on the trail and knew where she was, so I didn’t have to send Bella out with a small barrel of whiskey around her neck.
Sunday, October 5th, was the beginning of “Banned Book Week” and I wrote a piece about it on my writing blog.
I also finished reading Kamala Harris’ book “107 Days” on Sunday. This is a great, inside look at her incredibly short campaign and the challenges it faced, both from foes and friends. Highly recommend.
Monday we drove into Newnan for groceries, and the rest of the time at the campground we relaxed, read books , tatted and did some writing.
Thursday night we started getting ready to leave the next day for our next stop. This was a nice, restful stay.
Thanks for following The Wandering Wetheringtons.

So, you’re getting that knee looked at when you come to Orlando, right??
We’ll see.
