Driving and Hiking Through Arches National Park

Thursday, May 30, 2024 we returned to Arches National Park with our second timed entry at 7 am. We wanted to come back to get Dashcam video of the drive through the park and there were hikes we were too tired to do during our first visit. We drove all the way to the end of the Arches Scenic Drive road, which culminates at Devil’s Garden, and were on the trail for our first hike of the day at 7:40 am.

After Devils Garden we stopped at the Sand Dune Arch Trail trailhead for our next hike. The hike to Sand Dune Arch was pretty short and a lot of it was in the shade of the massive rock formations. However, there was only one way in and out and that was through a narrow passage between the rocks going single file. Tight spaces bother Cindy, but she did great in getting through. After that we were feeling brave and decided to hike across the barren desert ground to the Broken Arch. This trail felt about twice as long as the stated distance and the sun was hot even at 9 am in the morning, but we thought it was worth it once we arrived at Broken Arch. Except then we had to hike back across the sun-baked desert to return to Voyager’s parking spot.

After that it was on to the Delicate Arch trailhead so we could make the short hike to the Wolfe Cabin and ancient petroglyphs that we had skipped on our first visit there previously week.

Our final stop and hike was on Double Arch Trail. If you stand beneath the arches and speak in a normal volume people on the trail can hear you. So, of course, people felt they had to go up there and yell which was aggravating for those of us trying to enjoy the awe of the arches. But it’s people so what are ya gonna do?

We finally finished up around noon. We got to hike all the trails and see all the other arches we didn’t in the previous week, so we felt good. And these old geezers ended up hiking a little more than 5 miles that morning.

So we felt justified in doing nothing all day on Friday but resting and recuperating. Lol!

Saturday, June 1, 2024 we will hit the road for Dinosaur National Monument. Yabba dabba do!

Thanks for following The Wandering Wetheringtons.
