Monday morning, July 24, 2023 we left Quartz Flat (out the same tunnel we passed through on the way in) and drove a little over 200 miles Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park in Cardwell, Montana. If you’ve been reading our posts then you realize that we’re back-tracking along pretty much the same route that took us to Redmond and that we stayed at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park a little less than three weeks previously.
This time we were only staying for three nights.
Cindy had thought about going on the easier cavern tour when we returned, but decided she really didn’t want to go on it. So our stay was pretty quiet and relaxing with nothing special going on.
The one interesting thing took place when we left on the morning of Thursday the 27th. If you read that previous post you may remember the photo of the bridge sitting on dry land. As we were approaching that area on the two-lane highway traffic began backing up. It was never a busy highway during either of our stays, so we were worried there might have been an accident.
But after a couple of miles we could see someone in the middle of the road directing cars into the open, grassy area to our north. We could also see oncoming traffic was backed up as well. And the grassy area was covered in cars, RVs, and tents for as far as you could see, all the way up to the land-bound bridge and beyond. As the vehicles in front of us made their turns into the grass we got closer and closer to the entrance. When we finally got there I asked the guy directing traffic what was going on and he said it was a country music jamboree.
You can see a small amount of the massive amount of cars, RVs and tents in the photos.
And that was it for this stay at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park.
