We left Crater Lake RV Campground around 9:45 am on Saturday, June 21st and drove about 4 1/2 hours to Sutton Campground near Florence, Oregon on the western coast. It rained for about 3/4 of our trip, but fortunately didn’t rain while we were setting up.

The site was a tight fit with a very unlevel asphalt pad and lots of vegetation. Our living/dining slide-out was right up against the bushes. It took us longer than usual to get backed in due to the strange angle from the main road and the tightness, but we eventually got backed in and leveled out. This was an electric-only site so we were using our fresh water tank for our 4-night stay.

After dinner and watching a couple of episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, we were ready for bed.

Beach Trail…NOT!

Sunday morning we were walking around the campground when we spotted a trail and a sign that read “Beach Trail” so I suggested we hike the trail since we were only 1 1/2 miles from the beach. Bella would get a good walk and we would enjoy the beach for a while.

Except…the “Beach Trail” doesn’t go to the beach. The trail meandered back and forth, up and down, snaked around back upon itself and felt like we were trekking through the Amazon Rain Forest. The two snakes that made Cindy scream when they crossed her path especially added to the “Jungle Vibe” of the hike.

She was obviously more afraid of them than they were of her.

After about two miles of being teased by the off and on thinning of the trees and sporadic sounds of waves, we came across a woman on the trail and asked her if it went to the beach. “No”, she said, “you cant get to the beach from this trail. You have to drive down the main road (101) and turn right at the hotel to get to the beach.”

Well, shoot.

So we hiked BACK to the campground; making it a four-mile hike with no rest that we hadn’t planned on taking. But at least Bella seemed to have fun.

Spent the afternoon reading, writing and a bit of necessary napping after the physical exertion of the unexpectedly long hike.

The Borg

That night we watched the final third-season episode of ST:TNG, which was a cliffhanger. Cindy was SO lucky she didn’t have to wait three months between seasons to find out if the crew could rescue Captain Picard (Locutus) from the Borg like I had to when it first aired on TV in 1990. We just popped in the next disc and continued on.

Instant gratification rocks!

The Beach…Finally!

Monday morning we confined our morning hike to the loops of the campground where we found some interesting trails. Then we drove into Florence to fuel up Voyager before driving to the beach that we tried to hike to the previous day.

It was cold, windy and damp (to me), but Cindy loved it. Some reviews said you might see whales offshore, but we didn’t. We walked, hand in hand, along the sandy shore, ran from incoming waves, and enjoyed the salty air all around us.

Cindy picked up a couple of shells, but there weren’t many. We found some weird looking seaweed you can see in the photos. I was hesitant to touch it, lol.

All in all, it was fun to be back on a west coast beach.

Mutant Tree

Tuesday we hiked around the campground again and I showed Cindy the “Mutant Tree” I found a couple of sites away from ours. Man, that thing was warped! Wonder what caused it to grow in the way that it did. Take a look at it in the photos and see what you think.

The rest of the day was spent relaxing, reading and writing.

That evening we found out that Bobby Sherman had died of cancer at the age of. 81. He was one of Cindy’s earliest crushes when she was a young lady. I pulled out my iPhone and played the two songs of his I had in my music files: “Easy Come, Easy Go” and “Julie, Julie, Julie Do Ya Love Me?” We sang along and danced around Nomad as a way to honor his memory.

Then we watched a couple of more episodes of ST:TNG, read some and called it a night.

Thanks for following The Wandering Wetheringtons.
